Today, I’m thrilled to share details about our latest product update: GEO Audit.
Previously, the GEO Auditing tool has been instrumental in uncovering blind spots and providing actionable insights to improve your brand and website performance. Now, we’re excited to introduce the all-new GEO Audit.
This article covers everything you need to know about how it works and what it can do for you.
Generative Engine Optimization: The 3 Pillars to Boost Your AI Search Performance
With the introduction of our GEO Audit tool, we’ve been dedicated to supporting you in enhancing your website’s citation ratio. In simpler terms, the GEO Audit tool is designed to help your website earn more citations across platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI-driven search engines.
Why Does This Matter?
After collaborating with over 5,000 marketers and SEO professionals, and conducting extensive research (including our AI Search Study and GEO Guide), we identified a clear trend: three key marketing pillars consistently improve AI Search visibility.
The 3 Marketing Pillars:
- On-Page Content
- Digital PR & Earned Media
- User-Generated Content / Community Marketing
Put it differently.
The marketing objective is straightforward:
(1) Better Content on-page: Our goal is to improve both the quality of our content and the technology behind it. Several factors play a role in determining how our content is crawled, indexed, and referenced by tools like ChatGPT and similar platforms. Here are some key considerations:
- Robots.txt: Do we allow OpenAI crawlers to index our website?
- Dynamic Content: Does our website rely heavily on dynamic content or JavaScript? If so, this could render parts of our site invisible to OpenAI crawlers.
- AI Readiness: How natural and engaging is our content? Do we include meaningful statistics, quotes, and facts? In other words, how well does our content resonate with our actual audience, as opposed to being filled with marketing jargon?
- Structured data: : Is our content well-organized? Do we use proper headline hierarchies? Are we utilizing schema.org markup effectively?
These are some key factors that influence how well our website and content perform (i.e., get cited) on platforms like ChatGPT and other AI-powered search engines.
(2) Get more brand mentions on the internet: Through our analysis of 100,000 websites in the AI Search Study, we discovered that a significant portion of website citations originates from:
- News & Media (29,6%)
- User Forums & Communities (19,2%)
In other words, nearly half (48.8%) of all website citations stem from either editorial content or user-generated content. The frequency and sentiment of brand mentions often depend on how our industry, topics, products, or company are discussed in these spaces.
Our Goal: Generate More Positive Brand Mentions
To achieve this, we need to focus on two key strategies:
- Digital PR: Develop effective outreach campaigns targeting relevant media outlets and influencers within our niche.
- Community Engagement: Create a robust strategy to activate and incentivize our community members to engage and contribute.
What is the GEO Audit of OtterlyAI
The GEO Audit tool from Otterly AI is a Generative Engine Optimization feature originally launched in April 2025. As of July 2025, we are introducing our GEO Audit tool 2.0 that is designed to evaluate your website’s visibility and readiness for AI Search Engines (like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity) by:
- Auditing your website & scoring your pages across 25+ AI-visibility factors
- Auto-generating prioritized fix‑lists with actionable recommendations
Domain or URL Audit
When performing a GEO Audit, you have two distinct options to choose from:
- Domain Audit: Want to analyze an entire website? Whether it’s your own or a competitor’s, the Domain Audit feature in OtterlyAI evaluates the top 20 pages based on its sitemap.
- URL Audit: If a full website audit isn’t necessary, you can focus on specific URLs instead. This option is perfect for identifying areas where improvements are needed or for analyzing high-performing pages. With the URL Audit, you can assess any individual URL with ease.
When you run a URL Audit with OtterlyAI, it checks both the content on the page and technical details to find areas for improvement and ways to optimize. Here are the main things it looks at:
- Dynamic vs. Static Content: How much of the page is static (unchanging) vs. dynamic (changing)? It’s important that the key content on a page is static because dynamic content might not be readable by tools like OpenAI crawlers.
- Page Speed Test: Page speed, SEO (search engine optimization), accessibility, and overall good practices are important—not just for Google, but also for AI-based search tools. Meeting these requirements helps your page get noticed by platforms like ChatGPT. For this, we use PageSpeed Insights from Google.
- AI Readiness: Is your content unique? Does it sound natural? Does it include quotes, statistics, or facts that ChatGPT can easily reference? These are some of the things we evaluate during the audit.
- Structured Data: Having a clear structure, rich content types (like images and videos), accurate metadata, and a strong technical setup for your website is essential. These basics ensure your content can be referenced effectively.
