I love Google Search Console.
It’s hands down one of the best SEO tools ever made – because the data and insights come directly from Google itself.
And now that Google Search Console (GSC) also tracks queries from AI Overviews and AI Mode, we all have access to real prompts that real users type into Google’s AI search features.
But here’s the catch:
The Biggest Limitation Right Now
How do we know which prompts to track? Every marketer I talk to struggles with these questions:
- Which prompts are my audience actually using on ChatGPT and other AI-powered search engines?
- How do I build a prompt list worth focusing my energy on?
The reality?
👉 There’s no Google Search Console for ChatGPT (yet).
👉 OpenAI doesn’t disclose prompt data either.
That’s why we built the OtterlyAI Keyword Research Tool to help solve this challenge. Our tool uses three core approaches (which you can try for free here):
- Turning keywords into search prompts
- Reverse-engineering the user journey from a URL to uncover relevant prompts
- Performing brand-based searches to find topics and prompt associations
Our customers love this because it makes brainstorming and finding relevant prompts for each stage of the customer journey way easier.
But today, I want to add one more powerful method to your toolkit:
💡 Using Google Search Console to extract real prompts—and then analyzing them in OtterlyAI.
Here’s the exact step-by-step process.
Step 1: Identify Prompts in Your Google Search Console
Go to Google Search Console → Queries tab.
Here, you’ll see a (very long!) list of top queries where your site appeared. Hidden in there? Prompts from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Since Google doesn’t yet separate organic clicks from AI-related impressions, you’ll need to focus on long-tail queries.
➡️ The longer the query, the more likely it came from AI Mode or triggered an AI Overview.
These queries are gold for understanding how real users phrase their questions – perfect for SEO and product marketing.
Step 2: Export Top Queries
Because Google Search Console’s filtering is limited, export your Top Queries as a CSV or as a Google Sheet.
Step 3: Calculate Query Length
In your exported sheet, create a new column called Query Length and use this formula:
=LEN(A2)
Now sort the sheet from longest to shortest query.
Congrats – you now have a list of real user prompts.
Step 4: Filter, Prioritize & Categorize
Next, clean and organize your prompt list. Here’s a ChatGPT prompt I use to filter and prioritize my prompts before importing them into OtterlyAI:
I have a list of search prompts where (my website) appeared in Google search results.
Your tasks:
(1) Filter out irrelevant prompts – remove any queries unrelated to (my product topics)
(2) Identify the 50 most relevant prompts based on:
- High commercial or transactional intent (people comparing tools, looking for solutions, or intending to buy).
- Strong product fit for (my brand) (list couple of topics)).
(3) Provide the final output as a table with the following columns:
- Search Prompt
- Search Intent (Commercial, Transactional, Informational, Navigational)
- Reason for Inclusion (e.g., bottom-of-funnel, competitor comparison, strong product fit, purchase intent).
(4) Rank the prompts from highest to lowest conversion potential (bottom-of-funnel first).
Provide me a csv file.
Step 5: Import into OtterlyAI
Go to OtterlyAI → Search Prompt Monitoring → Add Prompts
Upload your CSV.
I do recommend to also tag those prompts. E.g. I tagged them as “Google Search Console Prompts”. This way, I can later identify, analyze and compare the performance of those prompts to other prompts.
After a short processing time, you’ll be able to:
✅ Track brand mentions, website citations, and domain rankings for these real prompts
✅ See which competitors are most cited in AI Overviews & AI Mode
✅ Identify exact prompts where you need better brand visibility
Why This Matters
This workflow gives you a direct, data-backed way to see how people really ask questions about your product or market – inside AI Search Engines.
It’s a goldmine for:
✔ Prompt optimization
✔ Brand monitoring
✔ Competitive intelligence
